Short Term Disability

The Ave Maria Flexible Benefit Plan provides a short-term disability (STD) benefits plan to eligible employees who are unable to work because of a qualifying disability due to an injury or illness.

Disabilities arising from pregnancy or pregnancy-related illness are treated the same as any other illness that prevents an employee from working. Disabilities covered by workers' compensation are excluded from STD coverage.

This coverage is often called “salary continuation” because it continues to pay you 66 2/3% of your salary (to $750/week maximum) for up to 26 weeks when you are out of work with a disability (illness or injury).  Your employer pays the cost for this coverage.   There is a zero-day waiting period in the event of an accident; otherwise, there is a seven-day waiting period in the case of an illness.  An employee must use vacation and/or personal time to cover this period of loss.
